The Challenges of Special Needs Housing: Support Services

The main final hurdle for a young adult with special needs (YASN) in his / her own home, and most old (or otherwise prepared) obtains the necessary support services arranged. In short, very few families can provide the support you need YASN, either personally or by paying an agency to provide it. Almost all of them will become financial assistance to support their YASNs. Fortunately, this part is easier than it was in previous decades. Unfortunately, it is still not without problems.

Medicaid

The main source of funding for support services for most YASNs is Medicaid. In recent years, Medicaid pays only for certain types of disabilities, but recently a variety of "exceptions" (due to renounce the usual rules that pay Medicare) have emerged. The renunciation of home and community-based states gave permission to create programs that pay for services of all kinds on the base in the community or at home.

Of course, that does not mean that all statements made - Medicaid provides money, but the states themselves should create and fund programs. There is no guarantee that your state has a program that applies to their specific special needs. This does not mean that you can enter an existing program; almost every state has a waiting list for most adults to services related to special needs.

no Medicaid funding

Unfortunately, when you get into other funding levels, it quickly becomes impossible to talk about anything, but broader terms. Each state, county, and community has its own unique opportunities and obstacles. It is safe to say this: you should sit down with your family and search for each of these potential sources of funding:

• family support payment
• Private funding
• Private health insurance
• based on state funding
• Local financing
• Grants and Foundations

What I can expect to pay?

In a sense, the question of how much they cost support services varies greatly depending on your specific needs and where you live, it is still worth it. Geography has a little - for example, in Georgia, a family can expect to spend an average of $ 972 / year out of pocket for raising a child with special needs in adulthood; in Massachusetts, it is only $ 562.

Similarly, since the national average for a YASN-home environment, which costs:

• $ 20 day / for lack of "control" medical home visits,
• $ 61 / day for 6 hours of adult day care,
• $ 165 / day for 24 hrs nonmedical services in a group home environment,
• $ 456 / day (or $ 19 / hour) for medical care at home,
• $ 634 / day for services 24 hours in a group home.

These figures vary from 50% in either direction, as you might think to see the figures of Georgia vs previous Massachusetts, but can serve as a rough estimate of what to look for. Obviously, the less you need in terms of support, the less you have to pay - but getting the support you need should be your main concern, not saving money. Do not make it harder to try to skimp on its support structure - there will be many other challenges once you set up in a house with the support you need.
